Several international agreements have generated funding mechanisms to help countries make good on their commitments. This project will review existing international agreements to identify the funding mechanisms available for islands, as well as recommend how to effectively design sustainable financing mechanisms within a country. This investigation will focus on important treaties and international agreements including those that address climate change, biodiversity, marine pollution, ship-based pollution, and other regional environmental agreements and the fiscal resources associated with these agreements. Attention will be paid to legal intricacies of the funds and their distribution mechanisms. Additionally the project will identify successful in-country legal mechanisms that allow for sustainable financing. Existing weakness in approaches will be documented as well as successful case studies and best practices.
