Dockweiler Dune Restoration and Beach Cleanup: Surfrider LA x TBF

Hands-on volunteer event supporting ocean health and plastic reduction policy

-

Join Surfrider and The Bay Foundation's vibrant volunteer community in tackling plastic pollution — one cleanup at a time. Your efforts help remove harmful waste and fuel real policy change through data collection and advocacy.

Surfrider beach cleanups serve to raise awareness about the trash and litter problem confronting our waterways. The data collected from the trash you find at our cleanups helps shape Surfrider’s plastic reduction policy campaign initiatives.

Along with joining an active and vibrant community of volunteers, you will gain some insight into what we do at the Surfrider Foundation at our LA Chapter and at national level, collect trash from the beach, weigh your findings, and sort/record items found for our trash database.

In 2024, over six cleanups, volunteers removed over 2,000 pounds of trash from Tower 49 alone!

While every effort is made to ensure the safety of participants, the host organizations is unable to guarantee that the areas we are cleaning will be free of hazardous materials. There are risks and hazards of participating in beach cleanups, including, but not limited to, the risks of possible injury, infection, or diseases as a result of contact with needles, condoms, metal objects, burning embers, or other hazardous materials found at the cleanup or from over-exertion and environmental conditions.

At every beach cleanup, Surfrider Los Angeles staff provides volunteers with safety guidelines at the beginning of the event that participants must follow to prevent the aforementioned risks and hazards of such events. These include proper disposal of waste collected, off-limit areas that may be hazardous or contain sensitive wildlife habitats, ensuring proper hydration, and sun protection. Additionally, Surfrider staff will inform participants of the location of lifeguards in case of emergency and will instruct all participants to not pick up hazardous materials such as needles, chemical containers, or dead animals.

Volunteers are encouraged to exercise caution, wear appropriate protective gear provided at the cleanup, and follow all safety guidelines during the cleanup.
