Ph.D., Environmental Engineering Science, 1991, California Institute of Technology.

Current research is focused on:

1) The chemistry that takes place in cloud droplets, and its impact on atmospheric aerosols;

2) Pollutant concentrations and their sources in urban environments at high spatial scales;

3) Applying quantum-enhanced technology to sensors for application in air pollution, climate and public health;

4) Understanding what it is about particles that makes people sick;

5) Air pollution in Africa.

We apply a variety of tools and combine field and laboratory measurements, modeling, bibliometrics and machine learning techniques.

Professor Paulson holds a PhD from the California Institute of Technology in Environmental Engineering Science. She also holds two MS degrees; one in the same field also from Caltech, and one in Plant Biology from the University of Illinois, and a BA in Chemistry from the University of Colorado. She is the recipient of an NSF CAREER award, and currently holds a Fulbright Specialist Award for her work in Senegal, and frequently works with journalists on topics related to air quality, and has given over 80 invited lectures.
