Research Interests
We are investigating the bio-ecology and population genetic structure of Anopheles gambiae and its association with malaria transmission in the highland areas of Cameroon. We are studying vector ecology, behavior, and the impact of control measures on the role of Anopheles gambiae in disease transmission. We will use population genetic structure allelic variation at multi-allelic loci to look at questions of gene flow and genetic drift. Micro-satellite loci will also be an important tool in this study to cast light on the spread of genes for insecticide resistance.
The species, Anopheles gambiae, is found virtually everywhere in Cameroon and transmits malaria to humans in humid, forested environments in the south, in dry savannas and rice fields in the north, in rural, semi-urban, and urban settings, and at low and high altitudes.
