Marine vegetation provides a number of valuable ecosystem services, including preventing shoreline erosion, providing habitat and food for aquatic species such as fish, shellfish and invertebrates, and enhancing water quality. In addition, seagrass may help to reduce the harmful effects of ocean acidification, which occurs when carbon dioxide in the atmosphere – a greenhouse gas responsible for climate change – is absorbed by our oceans, decreasing the pH of waters and affecting the resilience, structure and function of natural communities.
