Atlas of (Remote) Islands and Sea Level Rise

A Talk with Christina Gerhardt, University of Hawai'i

Please join us for this provocative talk about the challenges of climate change for islands in remote parts of the world and the project of mapping and making visible their stories of and responses to current environmental precarity.

In a 2016 lecture titled “Let Them Drown,” Naomi Klein called attention to the nexus of climate change, colonial racism and poverty—as Rob Nixon has done in his book Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor. But Klein shifted the spotlight of these concerns to the oft-overlooked low-lying island nations. Their current day situation is indeed precarious.

In her current project Atlas of (Remote) Islands and Sea Level Rise, Christina Gerhardt presents the current climate change induced impacts on low lying islands and the solutions being put forward to them, in many cases by the indigenous inhabitants of the islands themselves.

The UCLA Laboratory for Environmental Narrative Strategies is delighted to sponsor this talk and demonstration of Professor Gerhardt’s project. Please join us! The event is free and open to the public.

Professor Christina Gerhardt is Visiting Scholar at the University of California at Berkeley and Associate Professor of Environmental Humanities, Film and German Studies at the University of Hawai’i. She is the author of Atlas of (Remote) Islands and Sea Level Rise (under contract) and the editor of Climate Change, Hawaii and the Pacific (under review).
