ESE classmates past and present connect at annual celebration

Few doctoral degrees produce such an impressive mix of professionals committed to the planet: resource conservationist, health risk assessor, ecologist, geologist, toxicologist, regulatory specialist, hazardous materials inspector, and more. Members of this rich alumni community come together every year for a special event to celebrate their alma mater and promote a culture of philanthropy.

On November 1, the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability hosted the 3rd Annual Environmental Science and Engineering Reception at the G2 Gallery in Venice. Bruin family ties were strengthened as seasoned environmental experts and students in various stages of the program gathered at the nature and wildlife themed art space. Guests roamed installations populated by photographs of penguins, polar bears, gorillas, tigers, exotic insects, whales, foxes, horses, schools of fish and birds of every feather in their native habitats around the globe.

Eugene Leong, the evening’s guest of honor and very first person to earn an ESE degree, employed the “Late Show with David Letterman” Top Ten format to share his best memories as ESE’s inaugural graduate. This year marks the 40th anniversary of his doctoral hooding ceremony in 1974.

In the presentation, Leong reflected on his experiences as an environmental scientist and engineer, local government executive, and appointed official. The author of numerous publications, who has consulted internationally, is now a part-time visiting professor at Peking University’s School of Government and College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering.

IoES Public Programs and Alumni Relations Manager Kate Thomas said, “Engaging with our alumni is a critical step in supporting the advancement of the program. The resources, counsel, and opportunities graduates provide to current students and each other is notable. It’s a great network that we are happy to help build and support here at the Institute.”
