The LA Residential Energy Transition (RESET) Tool—your next energy bill reimagined for electrified futures

Explore how renewable energy transitions and home electrification will shape household energy spending and burden across Los Angeles.

Originally developed to inform the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s (LADWP’s) LA100 Plan, the city’s roadmap to 100% carbon-free electricity, the LA RESET Tool from UCLA’s California Center for Sustainable Communities and Luskin Center for Innovation has been rebuilt as an interactive online platform now available to the public. 

The LA RESET Tool empowers researchers, policymakers, neighborhood organizers, and interested residents to explore how renewable energy transitions and home electrification will shape household energy spending and burden across Los Angeles from 2025 to 2045—modeling eight electrification upgrade scenarios across five building types and two energy transition trajectories.

By integrating electrification and energy rate projections with millions of metered energy consumption data points, building characteristics, and sociodemographic data, the LA RESET Tool serves a wide array of users.

The publicly available LA RESET Tool takes comprehensive and complex modeling to a simple and flexible set of map-based and graphical interfaces. It can help users answer pressing energy transition questions such as:

  • What does baseline energy spending and consumption look like in my neighborhood?
  • How can I expect energy burden and home energy spending to change among energy transition policies and electrification efforts?
  • Are annual energy bills estimated to increase or decrease with different scenarios, and by how much?
  • How might electricity and gas fuel spending be affected by the energy transition?

From policy development to community curiosity about the future of utility and fuel spending, the LA RESET Tool illuminates the larger story behind Los Angeles’s future energy landscape while allowing users to zoom in on the granular details that matter most to them.
