Unesco threatened to place Machu Picchu on its List of World Heritage in Danger in 2016 because of the unsustainable ways in which the site was being run. Prof. Deepak Rajagopal discusses one way to mitigate tourist-related chemical pollution.  “Everyone talks about the problems with carbon and pollution. But chemical pollution – in this case, dumping oil into the river and reducing chemicals that otherwise would not be there and using more naturally degradable, vegetable-based soaps – is a big plus.”
