John R. Froines, Chemist and Member of the Chicago Seven, Dies at 83
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of environmental activist, Chicago 7 defendant, and UCLA IoES emeritus professor John Froines, who passed away last week. Some of his notable research uncovered which jobs and industries in Southern California had the most exposure to 500 distinct toxins. As the director of UCLA’s Occupational Health Center, he conducted research to investigate how some industrial toxins cause early brain aging and how others contribute to the onset of cancer. Dr. Froines was the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health’s Director for 25 years and also served as the Director of the Southern California Particle Center and Supersite. His research interests were in the qualitative and quantitative characterization of risk factors in environmental and occupational health.
