Job Announcement
Postdoctoral Scholar in Spatial Environmental Health

Position Description

The Institute of the Environment and Sustainability invites applications for the position of postdoctoral scholar for 2 years from September 2024 to August 2026.

The Postdoctoral Scholar appointment is a full-time position of advanced academic preparation and research training under the mentorship of faculty member Travis Longcore (Institute of the Environment and Sustainability). The postdoctoral scholar will work to advance scholarship on the use of big spatial data in assessing environmental exposures to extreme heat within outdoor urban environments, characterizing vulnerability of communities to these exposures, and developing policy-friendly recommendations regarding shade in outdoor environments in the County of Los Angeles. The scholar will also advance their individual research and publication agenda within spatial aspects of environmental health as they intersect with the project.

Basic Qualifications: To apply for this position applicants must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. (or equivalent) except the dissertation in spatial sciences, geography, environmental science, environmental health, public health, or a related discipline granted from an accredited university within the last five academic years at the time of application.

Additional Qualifications: Ph.D. (or equivalent) conferred by the appointment start date.

Preferred Qualifications: We seek applicants with strong quantitative analytical skills, previous experience working with big spatial data, and significant expertise with spatial analysis. Applicants with a record of working on spatial dynamics of environmental exposure or with a substantive interest in developing a research agenda on spatial analysis in environmental health are strongly preferred. Demonstrated experience with research on extreme heat exposure and with hazard mitigation planning would be an asset.
