VSTEM Spring 2026 Workshops
Veterans in STEM (VSTEM) is hosting hybrid workshops this quarter on Wednesdays and Thursdays. VSTEM focuses on supporting veterans & people who are veteran-affiliated (dependents and spouses). However, these events are open to all CDLS Fellows & community members.

Tech Tour
Date: Wednesday, May 6, 2026 (Week 6)
Time: 1pm – 2pm
Description: A tour of the California Nanosystems Institute that will introduce attendees to UCLA’s tech incubator.
Effective Science Communication Workshop
Date: Thursday, May 14, 2026 (Week 7)
Time: 4pm – 5pm PDT
Description: This workshop will focus on improving verbal and written communication skills in STEM fields. Topics will include presenting complex scientific ideas clearly, writing for scientific journals, and communicating with both expert and non-expert audiences.
Chemistry Lab Tour
Date: Wednesday, May 20, 2026 (Week 8)
Time: 1pm – 2pm
Description: A tour of the Paul S. Weiss Group Lab including demos such as how the artificial color Red No. 3 works compared to natural red.
Geochemistry Lab Tour
Date: Wednesday, May 27, 2026 (Week 9)
Time: 1pm – 2pm
Description: A tour of the Tripati geochemistry lab including a look at how mass spectrometers work and how samples are weighed.
Publication Strategies in STEM Workshop
Date: Thursday, June 4, 2026 (Week 10)
Time: 4pm – 5pm PDT
Description: A session focused on the process of publishing scientific research, from selecting the right journal to responding to peer review. The workshop will include advice on manuscript preparation, handling rejection, and promoting published work.
