Level up for the environment with a graduate degree from UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability

The effects of climate change are ramping up. Jobs are booming in green business. And the world’s cities keep growing, while human needs place an increasing strain on natural systems.

Now more than ever, the world needs well-educated experts to take on environmental challenges using a variety of approaches and tools. You can get those tools — and have an inspiring time in the process — with a graduate degree from UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability.

Applications opened this week and will close December 15.

The institute currently offers two degree-granting graduate programs: the professional doctorate in Environmental Science and Engineering (D.Env.) and the Ph.D. in Environment and Sustainability.

The professional doctorate in Environmental Science and Engineering is a one-of-a-kind program. Perhaps the closest comparison is a medical doctorate, but for the planet. In line with that model, students complete their dissertation working in an environmental residency with a business, government agency or nonprofit organization.

The goal of the degree is to create the next generation of master problem solvers. Since being founded in 1973 by Nobel laurate Willard Libby, more than 230 graduates have gone on to take senior leadership positions at places such as the Environmental Protection Agency, the Walt Disney Company, the Army Corps of Engineers and AECOM.

Our recently-launched Ph.D. in Environment and Sustainability welcomes its first class this fall, drawing elite thinkers from around the globe. Students in this program will build expertise in two distinct disciplines, with two faculty advisors.

The Institute of the Environment and Sustainability is building a global network of environmental experts to meet the challenges of the 21st century and beyond. We hope you’ll consider joining us.
